Lunches December 5th - 9th

Boogs lunches are inspired by the books we read at bedtime the previous evening. I usually only post his lunches once a week. Click on the "lunches" label at the end of this post to see lunches from previous weeks.

Polar Slumber/Sueno Polar by Dennis Rockhill
This is a beautiful wordless picture book about a dreaming girl and her adventure in the artic snow with two friendly polar bears. Wordless picture books are wonderful for encouraging little storytellers. At the end of the book the author has written a poem to go with the pictures. It is fun to page back through the book to match the poem's stanzas with each picture. In the lunchbox: Babybel dreaming girl under a marshmallow blanket, salami, sweet potato chips, carrots in hummus, snowflake pb&j sandwich, and grapes.
Snowman lunch inspired by the song "Frosty the Snowman".  PB&Nutella sandwich balls snowman (idea taken from  here: Biting the hand that feeds you ), extra carrot noses, arm choices Chex Mix, mini marshmallow snowmen, snowflake cheese, and blueberry night sky.
Boogs' school is having Book Fair this week. I was going to make a lunch based on the book: Book Fair Day by Lynn Plourde, but it did not turn out how I wanted it to. I was trying to make a few sandwich balls to represent kiddos reading books at the Book Fair, but the bread kept tearing. So, it turned into a little monster lunch. Pb&Nutella sandwich balls, Chex Mix, carrots, Babybel cheese, blueberries, cantaloupe (not pictured).

Armadillos Sleep in Dugouts and Other Places Animals Live by Pam Munoz Ryan
Boogs favorite animal home mentioned in this book is a beaver lodge. A few years ago, his Grandmaman gave him a "Bucky the Canadian Beaver" puppet. He still likes to play with it. In the lunchbox: ham beaver in a pretzel & shredded cheese stick lodge, pumpkin chocolate chip termite mound muffin, orange beehive, blueberry river home for hippos, and spinach leaves & carrot branches for sloth's home.

The Magic Dreidels by Eric Kimmel
Boogs has been unwrapping one holiday book each morning for us to read together.  Today we read The Magic Dreidels. The dreidels in this story spin out latkes, gelt, and fleas. In the lunchbox: pb&j dreidel, cheese "gelt", turkey salami "latkes" (Boogs is not a big potato eater, or I would have included actual latkes), mango, and spinach with broccoli.

Tiny Little Fly by Michael Rosen
One pesky little fly can sure cause a lot of commotion! In the lunchbox: ham, olive & cheese tiger, raisin fly with pumpkin seed wings, box of extra flies, olives, yogurt, sweet potato chips, and pineapple with words from the story written on the sides of the container. I should have turned the container on its side so you could see them. I just noticed that I forgot to push the green container of carrots and hummus into my shot.

  6. Thanks, everyone. Just so you know, the snowflake sandwich is on White/Wheat bread. I don't think my son has ever had real white bread. :-)
