First Week of 2nd Grade Lunches

Boogs' lunches are inspired by the books we read together at bedtime, for homework, or just for fun. I usually use a book we read the previous day for the next day's lunch. I post a week of lunches at a time, usually on Fridays. You can click the "lunches" label at the end of this post to see the story themed lunches we have made in the past.  All of this week's lunches were inspired by back-to-school stories.

First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg
Sarah is not ready for her first day at a new school. She hides under her blankets and kind of feels sick. Sarah delays leaving the house as much as she can. She imagines her class will be filled with wild kids who like to pick on each other. When Sarah finally arrives, the nice principal takes her to her new classroom. The last page of the book has a little surprise ending that lets you know everyone can have the jitters. Boogs has had a bad case of the jitters this year. When we saw the class list, Boogs realized that none of his best buds were going to be in his class. It made him really sad and nervous about 2nd grade. I am hoping his second week of school will be much calmer than this week.

In the Laptop Lunchbox: Babybel Sarah hiding under an almond butter & jelly blanket sandwich, "JITTERS" cut out of fruit leather, dried apricot, Chex Mix, apple, baby spinach, cucumber in the shape of apples, carrot hearts, and salad dressing.

Troll Teacher by Vivian Vande Velde
Miss Turtledove is a teacher and a troll! She eats chalk and backpacks, throws things, runs her fingers down the chalkboard and many other troll-like things. No one but the children seem to realize Miss Turtledove is a real troll. She eventually leaves the school. At the end of the book, Elizabeth  discovers that the replacement teacher looks like a vampire. Boogs said this book was okay but not great. He let me know that his new teacher is definitely not a troll. He said she is really nice but he still does not want to go to school. (sigh)

In the ELB Lunchbox: ham & cheese inside spinach tortilla Troll with ham hair, candy eyes, sunflower seed nose & cheese teeth, dried apricots, Pirates Booty, mango, and broccoli.

Miss Malarkey Doesn't Live in Room 10 by Judy Finchler
A little boy and his classmates thought their teachers lived at school. They imagined what all of the teachers were doing in the school building after school - eating dinner in the cafeteria, playing in the gym, and sleeping on bunk beds in the Teachers' Lounge. When Miss Malarkey moved into the same apartment building as one of her students, the student learned the truth. Boogs read this book to me and let me know that he never believed teachers lived at school. He said he has always known better than that!

In the ELB Lunchbox: salami & cheese Miss Malarkey sandwich, pita chips books, okra chips, salad with radish stars, and grapes with letter picks from All Things For Sale.

Froggy Goes To School by Jonathan London
On the first day of school, Froggy woke up late and ran to the bus stop. Oops! He forgot to put on clothes and was only in his underwear. What a terrible beginning to a new school year! Luckily, it was all just a bad dream. Froggy's father woke him on time and he had a wonderful first day of school.

In the ELB Lunchbox: salami & cheese CuteZcute Froggy, tomatoes with S S radishes for Swamp School, Pringles, marshmallow with Froggy's underwear, carrots with hummus, blueberries, and plums.

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
Details of this lunch are in my First Day of 2nd Grade post.

Boogs told me he is ready to read something else beside back-to-school stories. Good, because I have already picked out a couple of good, non-school related books for next week.

    1. Thanks, Jenn. The troll in the book was actually purple. We had to compromise and use green.
