Summer is slipping away

We have reached the point in our summer that Boogs waits for all year long. Diving Board Class!

This is Boogs' 7th summer to take this class. It is Monday through Thursday, two hours a day, for two weeks. Boogs was a bit mad and a little sad to find out, months after I booked the class in February, he had to attend a week of band practice during his first week of diving class. I talked with Mr. B, his band teacher, about this diving class having a conflict with band. I coordinate summer schedules with another family so all three kids can take the class together. Mr. B assured me he would take Boogs' diving class into consideration when creating the summer band practice week schedule. He did! There were three sections of practice times. Mr. B scheduled the trombone, bass clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon time for 12:15. Boogs' class ended at noon, so he did have to miss 20 minutes each day. We were happy the time did not completely overlap the class. It was a daily mad dash to get out of the pool, change clothes, throw a lunch box in the back seat, scarf down food, and speed over to school. Luckily, summer band practice is only one week for Boogs.

There aren't many pools in our area with diving boards. Boogs LOVES the diving boards, especially the high dive.

Boogs was playing around when jumping off the high dive in the picture below. He did a spin, not a flip, in the air.

I had been motioning throughout the class for Boogs to point his toes. He made sure to look right at me when he jumped, instead of dived, off the high dive with flat feet. Can you see his cheeky expression?

He has been practicing his "hurdle" jump. You take a big step-jump then bounce on the end of the board before jumping off. I'm always afraid he is going to slip and smack his face.

 He did slip when trying to do a back dive off the low board. It was pretty funny.

At the end of last week, we had the chance to hang out with my husband for a couple of hours on two different days. We went on our annual summer shopping trip to the BigTop Candy Shop.

This is such a neat little store. It is decorated with circus posters that look like images from the 1800s and old candy/soda advertisements. There are tons of different types of candy in the store. Boogs can spend two hours making his choices.

 So much to choose from.

 The final selection. Boogs was happy with his choices. It will be a year before we come back again.

Boogs has been wanting to go to the Kura Conveyor Belt Sushi restaurant since they opened last summer. We finally made it.

 All of the booths are next to a continuous moving line of small food plates.

The plates are protected in little plastic domes. There is a sign telling what is in each dome. After you eat the food off your plate, you slide the empty plate into a slot. Every time five plates have been entered, a screen will show a short cartoon. When your table reaches 15 plates, a small prize ball will drop from the shoot above the table.

Boogs is an adventurous eater. He had salmon, tuna, octopus, conch, sesame balls, flounder fin, and several other items. The only one that did not agree with him (made him gag) was the conch.

It was a fun place to have lunch. The food was good, not great. I don't think we will return, but it was a fun thing to try.

After lunch, we ended up at a book store for a couple of hours before heading to the library to check out books for free.

I have to go back to work on Thursday, August 9th and Boogs returns to school on August 16th. This summer has simply flown by. We are going to make the most of the few days we have left.

First Week of August

Whew! The first week of August was certainly a busy week for our family. Boogs started a two week diving board class on Monday the first. This is his 5th year taking this diving board class and he loves it!!! Every year, he takes the class with his friends Z & E. Last year they complained that they did not get enough diving time. This year we signed them up for two hours of classes each day for two weeks. They are very happy with the extra diving board time. Boogs does not feel like he has truly experienced summer until he has had his two weeks of diving board class.

On Monday, they spent the class getting used to diving again. Then we went to the park to play for a while.

By Tuesday, Boogs was comfortable enough to start working on his high dive skills. He said he is going to focus on keeping his feet together better.

He also spent time with Coach Will working on his back dive.

 

He got the hang of it pretty quickly.

By Wednesday, Boogs high dive was looking much better. Boogs told me his goal is to do an eggroll dive by the end of the week.

 

After diving board class and playground time on Monday, Boogs had a babysitter. My husband and I went to a class to get certified for scuba diving with a Nitrox tank. 

After diving board class on Tuesday, we went out to lunch with Z & E. Then Boogs had to hang out in the lobby of a lawyer's office while my husband and I had our wills made and signed. My husband and I were leaving on a scuba diving trip on Wednesday, so we wanted to be sure Boogs would be taken care of if something happened to us.

We took Boogs to diving board class on Wednesday and watched his first hour of diving. Then, my husband and I got in the car to head to the Gulf of Mexico for our next diving adventure on a live-aboard dive boat. Boogs spent the night with Z & E and then went with them to diving board class the next morning. On Thursday, my parents went to watch Boogs dive. They took him home with them after class. They sent me a couple of pictures of their hike into Longhorn Caverns. They kept Boogs until we returned late Friday night. Thanks Mom and Dad!
