Dr. Seuss' Birthday Lunches

 March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' Birthday. When I was teaching in a regular classroom, we always had a Seuss Celebration Day. Now, I celebrate Seuss with Boogs by making Seuss inspired lunches. My bento making friends in the Bento Bloggers & Friends group always come up with amazing lunches to go with favorite Dr. Seuss books. Be sure to take a peek at them HERE and HERE! Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss

Yertle, King of the turtles, wanted to rule over all he could see. He decided he must get higher so he could see and rule over more territory. He commanded the turtles in his pond to climb on each others backs to make a tower for him to sit upon. The poor turtles in the tower were aching and hungry. But King Yertle insisted they stack themselves higher and higher. Yertle was determined to be the highest thing around, higher even than the moon. But one little turtle who had had enough, simply walked away from the stack. Foolish Yertle's plans were ruined. Boogs' lunch is filled with things Yertle thought he ruled over.

In the Laptop Lunchbox: ham & cheese Yertle sandwich, blueberry bush, broccoli trees, radish butterfly, cheese cat, Goldfish Cracker fish, fruit snacks, and a cheese moon that always remained higher than Yertle.

Bartholomew and the Oobleck

There are still many wonderful Dr. Seuss books that I have yet to make lunches out of. Boogs still likes to read his Dr. Seuss books so we will probably see a few more lunches before he outgrows them. For now, he has a Dr. Seuss All About Me Journal that he is still excited to fill out. I picked it up at Micheal's a while back.

Dr. Seuss' Bartholomew and the Oobleck

Dr. Seuss' Birthday is coming up this weekend. Boogs and I have been reading a few Dr. Seuss books and doing some activities with them.

 

Bartholomew and the Oobleck 

 

In Bartholomew and the Oobleck, the King complains about there only being four things that come from the sky - sun, rain, fog, and snow. The King commands his royal magicians to come up with something else. They create a green slimy substance that ends up threatening the entire kingdom. In the ELB lunchbox: Bartholomew discovering the falling oobleck drawn on cheese, ham sandwich, cucmber letters, apples & blackberries, carrots with dressing in a Mini ELB container.

Boogs thought the oobleck was so cool that he wondered if we could make some. He emptied a 4 oz bottle of white school glue into a bowl then slowly started pouring in 1/2 cup of liquid starch. Boogs kneaded that together with a couple of drops of green food coloring to make his own version of oobleck.

 It was cold and slimy. He played with it for quite a while before adding a few toys to it.

 Boogs had to help rescue some army men from the oobleck. They were trapped and starting to sink.

 He fashioned a special harness out of rubberbands to save them.

 Boogs played with this for probably an hour or so. The neat thing about this oobleck is that you can seal in a sandwich baggie or an airtight container and play with it again another day.

 If I Ran the Zoo lunch

Gerald McGrew thought his local zoo could use a bit of updating. He described all kinds of unusual animals he would discover to keep in his own zoo. In the Laptop lunchbox: ten-legged pb&j lion sandwich in a cheese cage, ZOO spelled in fruit leather, berries, goldfish, and spinach. Boogs also had a small container of cottage cheese, not pictured.

Boogs and I each drew a picture of one animal we would add to Gerald McGrew's Zoo. Boogs created a "Zok" and I created a "Woofoozle". Boogs would only let me take a picture of him in the Cat and the Hat outfit if he could also take one of me. Lovely (shudder).

Celebrating the Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
Boogs is trying too hard to smile. That expression makes me smile.

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, I am participating in a Bento Blogger & Friends Dr. Seuss Blog Hop today. Boogs loves Dr. Seuss books! His all time favorite is Green Eggs And Ham. This lunch shows where to eat green eggs and ham. I will eat them with a marshmallow fox in a cracker box. I will eat green eggs and ham on a pb&j train in the cheese rain. I will eat them in a broccoli tree. Boogs also has blueberries and dried apricot in this lunch.

Horton Hatches The Egg was my favorite Dr. Seuss book when I was a kid. In this lunchbox, pb&j Horton is admiring his little cheese elephant-bird, there is a nest of Cheerios supported by pretzel branches, a circus tent made of strawberries, a salad with a carrot nest holding a spotted tomato egg, and yogurt.

I made a Seuss lunch this past weekend to go with the book Hop On Pop. In the lunchbox: Cheese kids hopping on cheese Pop. Ham, strawberries, spinach, and yogurt (not in the picture) complete this lunch.

A few weeks ago, I made a Dr. Seuss lunch based on the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Each item in this lunch represents a part of the book. One fish PB & Nutella sandwich, "this one has a little star" pb&j sandwich, "some are sad" blueberries, "and some are slow" ham & cheese snail-like rolls, "say what a lot of fish there are" Goldfish crackers, spinach & broccoli grass and shrubs for the place where the "sheep who took a walk in their sleep" walked, and yogurt that the Yink wouldn't drink because he only likes to "drink pink ink".
