Roald Dahl Day Bento Blog Hop

http://lunchfitforakid.blogspot.com/2015/09/lunches-91415-roald-dahl-day-blog-hop.html

Bento Bloggers & Friends are celebrating Roald Dahl's birthday with a Roald Dahl Day blog hop. By clicking on the Roald Dahl Day button at the end of this post, you can hop over to see the special Dahl lunch Astrid, from Lunches Fit For Kid, made to celebrate the day. The button will appear on each blog in the hop. Click the button on each blog's post to hop to the next one.

Boogs and I have read many Roald Dahl books together. There is no doubt that Dahl's writing can be a bit creepy but that is part of what makes it so much fun to read. We recently finished reading The Witches. It tells the story of the most horrible creatures on Earth - the Witches. Witches live their lives among ordinary people but they are anything but ordinary. The boy in this story, no name given, learns all about witches from his Norwegian Grandmamma. While on holiday with his Grandmamma, the boy finds himself trapped in a room with almost 100 child-hating witches. They do the unthinkable and turn the boy into a mouse. The witches plan to turn all of the children of England into mice so they can be exterminated by their own teachers and parents. It is up to one little mouse and his Grandmamma to save the day. Boogs and I enjoyed the overall story, but parts of it were rather terrifying. I would not read it with younger kiddos. Here is the lunch I made to go with The Witches.
In the ELB lunchbox: pb&j sandwich bottle of the Witch's Formula 86, boy-turned-mouse cheese with raisin eyes/nose & pepitas ears, gnarly witch-like claw rising out of berries, pretzel rod wall with cheese curtains that the boy-turned-mouse slinked around to avoid notice, broccoli treetops where the boy hid from a witch, and raisins.

Boogs and I also read Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes. This book is a collection of retold fairy tales in rhyming verse. Since these were retold by Dahl, the events that happened to the fairy tale characters are quite a bit different than what we are used to reading. I made this lunch to go with the last two tales in the book - Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf and The Three Little Pigs.
In Dahl's version of Little Red Riding Hood, Red says the usual, "What big ears you have, what big eyes you have." But, instead of talking about teeth, Red says, "But Grandma, what a lovely great big furry coat you have on." Then Red shoots the wolf and trades in her red hooded cape for a wolfskin coat. A little while later, another wolf goes after the Three Little Pigs. After the wolf eats the first two pigs, the last pig calls on Red for help. Red kills the Big Bad Wolf with one shot and helps herself to the pig. The last lines of The Three Little Pigs are: "Not only has two wolfskin coats, But when she goes from place to place, She has a PIGSKIN TRAVELING CASE." These were definitely revolting rhymes!
In the Laptop Lunchbox: Little Red Riding Hood Babybel Cheese in her dried seaweed wolfskin coat with almond butter & jelly body,  pretzel twigs, snack crackers straw, salami pigskin traveling case, broccoli/tomato/radish forest, dried apricot sunshine, and a marshmallow.

I hope you enjoyed our Roald Dahl Day lunches. Just click the button to hop over to Lunches Fit For Kid.

Eat, Drink, & Be Merry Holiday Hop

Bento Bloggers and Friends are feeling the holiday spirit in our lunchboxes. You can enjoy the holiday lunch inspiration by clicking through our blog hop.

I like to use children's books for inspiration for the lunches I make for my son. Here are a few holiday lunches I have made this year:

The Animal's Santa by Jan Brett
The Animal's Santa is Jan Brett's latest holiday book. Little Snow is not sure whether or not he should believe in the animal's Santa. All of the forest animals believe in him. They have mysteriously received gifts from him every year. Each animal has a different idea about what kind of animal is the animal's Santa. Little Snow's brother hung ice chimes to help him catch a glimpse of the animal Santa. The chimes woke the brothers up in time to see a snowy white owl dropping gifts for the animals. Little Snow finally believed in the animal's Santa.

In the Laptop Lunchbox: Little Snow bread, Babybel Snowy Owl Santa, cauliflower snow, tuna & avocado salad Christmas tree with celery greenery, red apple slices, yogurt, and veggies.

A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles M. Schulz
I grew up watching the Chalie Brown Christmas special every year. Now, my son watches it with me every year. This book is a written version of the cartoon special. Boogs and I enjoyed reading through it and seeing the great illustrations. Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!

In the ELB lunchbox: cheese drawing of Charlie Brown holding an ornament for his tree on top of ham, cashew & raisin ornaments, pb&j Christmas tree sandwich, okra chips, tomato ornament, kiwi, and salad.

Who's That Knocking On Christmas Eve? by Jan Brett
Every year, Kyri and her father are bothered by trolls who come and steal their Christmas dinner. This year is different. A boy and his ice bear stop by Kyri's hut and are invited in to join her. Pretty soon, the trolls come and break into the hut to steal the food. Fortunately, the ice bear was there to chase them away.

In the Laptop Lunchbox: salami & cheese troll, salami & cheese ice bear, cheese Northern Lights, salad with snowflakes, and fruit.

Our Christmas elf brought Boogs the Pez Santa and then Boogs asked me to make a Santa lunch.
The green & red lunch in the ELB lunchbox includes:  broccoli, strawberries, sweet pickles, tomatoes, yogurt, Zbar, and garlic bologna. (Boogs did not take the Pez to school.)

This year's festive holiday veggie platter.

BFF Shel Silverstein Blog Hop

http://www.zoeslunchbox.com/2014/09/shel-silverstein-hop.html

Shel Silverstein's birthday is today. Bento Bloggers & Friends decided we should celebrate this day by having a bento lunch blog hop inspired by the wonderful, funny, creative, and heartwarming work of Shel Silverstein.

I asked Boogs to look through the Shel Silverstein books in his room and pick out a few to read to me. The first book he chose was A Giraffe and a Half. Boogs loved the silly rhymes and outrageous things that kept being piled on top of the giraffe. Eventually, the giraffe is able to get rid of the whale with a tail, a snake eating cake, a rat in a hat, and so many other things.

In the Laptop Lunchbox: pb&j giraffe sandwich, salami & cheese hat with a rat under it, fruit leather snake with yogurt pretzel cake, strawberry rose for his nose, pumpernickel pretzel flute for him to toot, pistachios, and salad.

The next day, Boogs decided to read A Light In the Attic. He put bookmarks by all of the poems he wanted turned into lunches. So here are a couple of them:

Hot Dog lunch in an ELB lunchbox: cheese toast with provolone HOT DOG PET letters, hot dogs for pets, cutie oranges, and salad.

Boogs chose these foods to put in his lunchbox because they reminded him of The Giving Tree. In the ELB lunchbox: spinach leaves to make a crown, tomato apples for eating, pretzel trunk for climbing, okra chip branches for swinging, Pringles chip branches for making into a house, 1/2 cereal bar trunk for making a boat, yogurt, kiwi, and ham.

Boogs laughed at the Batty poem from A Light In The Attic. The baby bat screamed out in fright, "Turn on the dark, I'm afraid of the light." We made this lunch full of the bright light that scared Batty. In the ELB lunchbox: pineapple sunlight, carrot stick sun beams, Pirate's Booty moon glow, dried mango lights under BAT graham crackers, cheese & ham bat sandwiches, almonds, and cottage cheese.

The next lunch is one I made last year for Boogs. I just recopied the parts of the post that were about Shel Silverstein's poem Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out from Where The Sidewalk Ends.
I absolutely LOVED Shel Silverstein's poems when I was a kid. Boogs likes to hear them over and over again, too. My favorite poem in this book is Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out. You can clearly imagine how disgusting the trash at Sarah's house is by the desciptive words used in the poem.  Of course I had to make Boogs a garbage lunch to go with this poem!
In the ELB lunchbox: garlic green baloney, chunks of cheese, gristly bits of beefy roasts beef jerky, cold french fries, withered greens salad, crusts of black burned buttered toast croutons, and peach pit plum pieces.

Now that you have seen the Shel Silverstein lunches I have made, click on the Shel Silverstein Blog Hop button the see the lovely lunch made by Sarah for Zoe's Lunchbox.

Roald Dahl Day Blog Hop

http://lunchfitforakid.blogspot.com/2014/09/lunches-for-91214-roald-dahl-day-blog.html

Bento Bloggers & Friends are celebrating Roald Dahl's birthday with a Roald Dahl Day blog hop. By clicking on the Roald Dahl Day button at the end of this post, you can hop over to see the special Dahl lunch Astrid from Lunches Fit For Kid has made. The button will appear on each blog in the hop. Click the button on each blog's post to hop to the next one.

Roald Dahl's books are strange, wonderful, and slightly creepy. My son and I read a couple of new-to-us Dahl books during the past couple of weeks. Here are the lunches that I made based on the books we read.

Esio Trot
Mr. Hoppy is secretly in love with his downstairs neighbor, Mrs. Silver. Unfortunately, Mr. Hoppy is too shy to let Mrs. Silver know how he feels. Mrs. Silver seems to only be interested in one thing in her life, her tortoise. When Mrs. Silver confides that she is concerned about how little her prized tortoise is growing, Mr. Hoppy comes up with a scheme to make her think her tortoise is growing. Mr. Hoppy creates a set of words for Mrs. Silver to say each day to make Alfie grow. The title of this book is part of Mr. Hoppy's creation, Esio Trot is tortoise spelled backwards. Mr. Hoppy frequently replaces Alfie with slightly larger tortoises until Mrs. Silver feels he has grown enough. Mrs. Silver is overjoyed with Alfie's gain in size and gives all the credit to Mr. Hoppy.

In the ELB lunchbox: almond butter & jelly Alfie made with a FunBites cutter, cheese 7 for the perfect size replacement turtle, Esio Trot in cheese, Zbar grabber, raisins, kiwi, and salad with little radish hearts.

Danny, The Champion of the World
Danny lives with his father in a little wooden caravan next to their mechanic shop. One night, Danny found out about his family's long history of poaching peasants. Danny's grandfather had special names for the poaching methods he used. One night, Danny's father does not return from his poaching expedition in Hazell's Woods. Danny takes a car from their repair shop and drives it seven miles to Hazell's woods to look for his father. He finds his father at the bottom of a 12 foot pit with a broken leg. Danny is able to help his father out of the ditch and get away from Hazell's woods before they are caught poaching. Both father and son were so upset by Mr. Hazell's use of pits on his land, they decided to try and poach all of the pheasants in Hazell's woods. Danny came up with The Sleeping Beauty method of poaching - setting out sleeping pill laced raisin for the pheasants so they will fall from their high perches in the trees. The two of them try out this new method with great success. Unfortunately, their success is not complete. They took 120 sleeping pheasants from Hazell's woods and left them with the vicar's wife to pass out to the people of the village. When she started on her journey to pass out the birds, the birds were hidden in the bottom of her son's baby carriage. When the sleeping pills began to wear off, the birds began to wake up and fly out of the carriage.

Boogs, my son,  thought this must have been an amazing sight to watch those birds streaming out of the carriage. We decided that image should be part of his story themed lunch. In the Laptop lunchbox: pb&j baby carriage with pretzel wheels, pheasants made of banana chips with dried apricot heads & dried mango wings, raisins, salad with Sleeping Beauty radish letters, and Laughing Cow cheese.

Boogs and I enjoyed reading these Roald Dahl books. Boogs was rather concerned about the dishonesty and stealing in the books. We discussed that these were fictional characters and that he should not try to trick people like Mr. Hoppy did or steal from them like Danny and his father did.

BBF Back-To-School Basics Hop & Giveaway

It is difficult to believe that summer is almost over and the new school year will soon be here. Bento Bloggers & Friends (BBF) are joining together to share their back-to-school tips for packing lunch and are also having an awesome giveaway. You can enter for a chance to win the giveaway on the Rafflecopter near the end of this post. If you hop through the Bento Blogger & Friends blog hop you can collect a letter tile on each post in the hop. Once you complete the hop, simply arrange the letters in numerical order to spell a word to put in the Rafflecopter entry form.

Making lunches for school does not have to be a dreaded chore. My son helps me make his lunches. The lunches are usually inspired by the stories we read together at bedtime. It takes a couple of extra minutes to use a cookie cutter on a sandwich to make a lunch "story-themed". Here is a quick lunch I made this week inspired by an article in National Geographic Kids magazine:
It contains: ham & cheese leopard sandwich made with the CuteZCute cutter, banana chips ground, a tree made from a Zbar and pumpkin seeds, a marshmallow with a sun drawn on it, blueberries for water, and a salad.

This lunch has the basic supplies I use whenever I make a school lunch: container, silicone cups, cookie cutter (or knife), food markers, and yummy food my son will eat.

My favorite lunch boxes are EasyLunchboxes and Laptop Lunches. This lunch was put in an Easy Lunchbox. Both lunchboxes offer divided areas which is wonderful because my son is not a big fan of his food touching.

Silicone cups are a great way to separate food. All Things for Sale has a large variety of silicone cups.

There are so many adorable, easy-to-use cookie cutters on the market. I like to use my Wilton cutters or CuteZCute Cutters. It makes dressing up a lunch a snap. Sometimes I just use a sharp knife to cut story characters out of bread.
One of my favorite ways to add a quick detail to a lunch, is to use food decorating pens. I have found that this Ameri-Color Gourmet Writer set works the best for me. I used the yellow marker to draw a sun on the marshmallow in the leopard lunch.
Lastly, I need a good bag to put the lunch in. I like upright bags so the food does not get turned on its side. California Innovations Lunch Bucket is my favorite lunchbox. I have bought my son a new one each school year. This bag has two compartments. My son puts his water bottle in the top. Sometimes he forgets to close it tightly and it spills. With the two compartments, the water is contained in the top level. Healthy Eating Starts At Home had a great review on this bag last August, you can read it HERE.

Be sure to write down the tile letter with number as you go through the hop. You will want to collect all of the letter tiles in the hop before entering the Rafflecopter.

Click this hop button to find your next letter tile and to see what tips Biting the Hand That Feeds You has for back-to-school lunches.
http://www.bitingthehandthatfeedsyou.net/2014/07/back-to-school-blog-hop-and-giveaway.html
Have you made it through the hop and collected all 16 letters? Now, you are ready to enter the giveaway.

May the 4th Be With You (2014)

This is the 3rd year for Bento Bloggers & Friends May the 4th Be With You Blog Hop. It has been a lot of fun seeing all of the Star Wars inspired lunches made during the past two years. I am excited to see the new lunch creations this year. After you see my Star Wars lunch, make sure you click the May the 4th Be With You button at the bottom of this post to hop over to Bento Lunch to view Shannon's lunch. Then keep following the May the 4th buttons to see the rest of the lunches in the blog hop.

Darth Vader and Son by Jeffery Brown is a cute little book. Boogs bought it for his dad last Father's Day. It is one of the only Star Wars books in the house that is not a Lego Star Wars book. So, Luke and Darth Vader made their way into Boogs' lunch.
Sometimes my lunches do not turn out how I pictured them in my head. Boogs pointed out to me, "Princess Leia's hair should not look like buns on the side of her head if Yoda is going to be in the lunch. Her hair was different in the movies with Yoda." That is true.
In the Laptop Lunchbox: spinach tortellini Yoda, Babybel cheese split in half for twins Luke and Leia, mini pb&j Han Solo sandwich, falafel Chewbacca, Darth Vader on top of marshmallows, salad with radish stars, yogurt (not pictured), and Star Wars logo on top of applesauce. Luke and Darth Vader are holding lightsaber picks.

Here is a look back at my favorite Star Wars lunch.
In the lunchbox: marshmallow Stormtrooper, carrot stick lightsabers, nori Darth Vader, Yoda spinach tortilla quesadilla, Trash Compactor scene of leftover rice/beans/cheese/sour cream "garbage" with Luke, Leia, & Han cheese heads, chocolate Teddy Graham Chewbacca, and a pretzel rod to brace the walls of the compactor.

Bento Bloggers & Friends Valentine Bento Hop 2014

Bento Bloggers and Friends are joining together for two special Valentine blog hops today. I am part of the first hop which begins at 3 a.m. PST. The second hop begins at 7:30 a.m. PST. I can't wait to see the Valentine lunches from all 24 blogs participating in the hops. My son's lunches are inspired by the books we read together.

Dear Bunny: A Bunny Love Story by Michaela Morgan
Valentino and Valenteeny were two rabbits who lived across the field from each other. Valentino wrote a letter and left it in the hollow log, hoping Valenteeny would find it. Valenteeny also wrote a letter and left it in the hollow log. Unfortunately, a small family of mice took shelter from the rain in the hollow log and used the letters for their bedding. When each rabbit checked the log for a response to their letters, they were sad to find none. The mice realized their mistake. They searched through the bedding and found sweet words and phrases to put on a big heart for the rabbits to find. The rabbits found the new note and were happy.

Breakfast for lunch in the ELB lunchbox: boiled egg (split in half) Valentino & Valenteeny, cinnamon raisin heart bagel, pb&j mice mini-sandwiches, cottage cheese with sprinkles, and heart shaped strawberries.

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli
Mr. Hatch led a very orderly, repetitive, solitary life. His life changed suddenly when the postman delivered a giant box of chocolates with a note to his door. The note said, "Somebody Loves You!" That made Mr. Hatch feel so wonderful, he began to break out of his routine. He started smiling, talking with, and helping out his neighbors and co-workers. His life became full and joyful. Then the postman returned and let Mr. Hatch know the delivery had been a mistake. Mr. Hatch felt so unloved he reverted back to his orderly, repetitive, solitary life. His new friends and people in the community really enjoyed Mr. Hatch so they surprised him with an overflowing mailbox of cards, hearts, and candy to show their love. Boogs and I discussed the message of this story. Boogs decided the message was "to make a friend, you have to be a friend".

In the ELB lunchbox: ham & cheese sandwich with Mr. Hatch drawn on the cheese, mini marshmallow hearts, pretzels, orange slices, and salad with hearts made of carrots, radish, tomato, and peppers.

Now that you have seen my Valentine themed lunches, you should click the button below to hop over to Summer Mum's blog to view her Valentine lunch.

Winter Olympic Bento Blog Hop

The 2014 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony is tonight. I am joining a group of bento friends for an Olympic themed bento blog hop. After you view my post, be sure to click the button at the bottom of this post to see what special lunch Anna of Becoming A Bentoholic has made.

I think the mascots for the Sochi Olympics are pretty cute. So, I attempted to make a couple of lunches featuring the mascots. Boogs and I watched the short videos introducing each of the mascots. You can find them here, here, and here. I liked the Polar Bear video the best. Boogs liked the Hare video the best.

In the Laptop lunchbox: Sochi Polar Bear mascot made from rice, cheese Olympic rings, red & yellow pepper Olympic flames, honey chicken under flames, fruit & veggies in the Olympic Rings colors -  blueberries, red strawberries, yellow tomato, green broccoli, and black olives.

The Leopard is depicted a couple of different ways. Sometimes he has very tan fur and other times he has very white fur. I like this picture of the Leopard with a snowboard and used it as inspiration for this lunch.

In the ELB lunchbox: pb&j Sochi Leopard mascot with Kellogg's To Go cereal biscuit snowboard, boiled egg Sochi Hare mascot, cheese Olympic rings, salad, and plum slices.

Now, click the button below to go to Becoming A Bentoholic to see the next lunch in this blog hop.

Santa Claus Is Coming To Lunch Bento Hop

Bento Bloggers & Friends are celebrating the season with a series of themed blog hops. I am joining in on the last hop in the four part series. Today's hop theme is "Santa Claus is Coming to Lunch". How fun! Most school days I base my son's lunch on books we have read. So, I found a couple of fun books about Old Saint Nick and used them for lunch inspiration.

The Night Before Chistmas: A Goblin Tale by Clement C. Moore, Illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers

I love Clement C. Moore's classic Christmas poem and Boogs' favorite holiday is Halloween. We found the perfect book at our public library to give us a combination of both holidays. The text in this book is strictly Moore's Night Before Christmas poem. What makes this telling of the poem different are the illustrations by Jacqueline Rogers. Santa slides down the chimney into a tree house full of goblins. The little goblins are so curious and excited that they trip Santa and climb all over him. The goblins are causing a lot of mischief. Santa gently picks each goblin up and hangs them up on stocking hooks by the back of their shirts. Santa looks all worn out by the end of his visit. Boogs laughed and really enjoyed looking at each goblin filled page.
In the Laptop Lunchbox:
 Salami and cheese Santa sandwich
Candy stockings to hang on the chimney
 Coal raisins and dried apricots
Red Santa bag filled with Chex Mix toys
 Apple goblin
 Salad with radish star ornaments

Santa Claus the World's Number One Toy Expert by Marla Frazee

Ever wonder why Santa is so good at figuring out the perfect give for every child? Well, it is because he works hard all year, listens to kids, watches kids, does his research, tests out toys, and then finally finds the perfect toy for each child. Boogs had fun looking at the illustrations in this book. His favorite drawings were the pages showing how Santa tests out the toys to make sure they are sturdy and fun to play with.
 In the ELB lunchbox:

TOY spelled out in bread with a cheese background
Cheese Santa hopping on a pogo stick on top of a ham & cheese sandwich
Mini ham & cheese sandwich presents with letter picks spelling EXPERT
  Red & orange tomato balls
Santa pick with broccoli Christmas trees
  Santa pick with berries

Frightful Fall Blog Hop

Bento Bloggers & Friends are ready to share their frightful lunches with you again. Well, not all of the lunches are spooky. Some are Fall themed. This is the third hop this week of Frightful Fall  lunches. Be sure to glide through the other hops, too.

I could not make and share just one lunch for this hop. There are simply too many cute ways to turn food into spooky or Fall themed lunches. Make sure you don't miss any of the fun lunches by hopping over to KW Bento at the end of this post.

Stellaluna by Janell Cannon
Poor Stellaluna is separated from her mother when an owl attacks. Stellaluna manages to survive her fall by grabbing onto a branch and hanging upside down all night. In the morning, she discovers a nest of baby birds. Stellaluna climbs right in the nest and the mother bird agrees to take care of her. Stellaluna discovers how much she is alike and how different she is from the baby birds in the nest. Boogs and I have read this book many times and he always enjoys the happy ending.

In the ELB lunchbox: upside down boiled egg Stellaluna (made with the CuteZcute Animal Palz Mini Sandwich and Egg Press), almond butter & jelly owl, Chex Mix bird's nest, Stellaluna's favorite food - mango, and salad with a bug on it which Stellaluna thinks is disgusting to eat.

Boo to You! by Lois Ehlert
The mice want to have a harvest party but are afraid the meat eating cat will stop by. They create all sorts of creepy veggie combinations to scare off the cat.

In the ELB lunchbox: ham & cheese cat sandwich with candy eyes, spinach ears, cherry nose, red pepper tongue, and pumpkin seed teeth, grapes with a jack-o-lantern pick, and salad with a mini pepper monster to scare away the cat.

BOO! Boogs said this lunch was not very scary but it was very delicious.

In the ELB lunchbox: Boo Cheez-It Scrabble Junior crackers, marshmallow ghoul, mummy dogs (sausage in crescent rolls), jack-o-lantern Cuties, and salad with a spider pick.

Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett - I know I posted this lunch last week, but it turned out to be such a colorful Fall looking lunch I wanted to share it in the hop, too. In the ELB lunchbox: almond butter & jelly squirrel sandwich trying to catch all of the falling leaves. Leaves made of cheese, pineapple, strawberry, red/yellow/orange peppers, radish, and spinach. Leaf cutouts on Babybel cheese and on a tangerine. Zbar mini acorns.
