Boogs' First Kid K

A little over a month ago, I asked Boogs if he wanted to run a race with me. I would run the 5K and he could run the Kid K. Last time I ran this 5K a couple of years ago, Boogs was really interested in the kid race because each of the kids received a medal at the end of the race. He said he would run if he could get a medal. I signed us up for the race and invited a few friends and my mom to join us. Shortly after that, the Texas allergy season hit us hard. Boogs had a terrible cough that kept him up at night for almost a week. I was so worried about it that I took him in to the doctor's office twice within three days. I was not feeling well either. Two days before the race, I went to the doctor and found out I had a really bad ear infection. I had a reaction to the antibiotics and could not run the race or the Kid K with Boogs. Boogs was okay with going by himself.

This is the best picture I could get at the start line.

After I watched the kids start, I cut across the field to wait at the finish line. I expected to wait awhile because Boogs has usually been a slow runner in kickball and baseball. I was really surprised when the first few kids started coming in to the finish area. Boogs was the third runner to finish. WOW! I did not know he was that fast.

He was barely winded after the race. He explained that he could have been faster but he was not sure exactly where the finish would be so he slowed down for a little while. Boogs is excited about being in more races.

C, Mom, and Big Sis (C's oldest daughter) just before the start of the 5K.

My Mom was all smiles as she waved to Boogs.

While the others were running the 5K, Boogs found the bouncy house. He spent almost 30 minutes jumping while we waited for C, Mom, and Big Sis to finish their race. Where does he get all of that energy?
C was the first of the group to cross the finish line.
Big Sis and Mom came around the last corner together. I wish I had my video camera turned on. These two decided to run like Phoebe and Rachel for the last part of the race.
Mom with a double thumbs up as she crossed the finish line. I love her goofy spirit!
The after photo was all smiles. Wait, maybe the smiles were for thoughts about Kerby Lane pancakes for breakfast.
I was really disappointed that I was unable to participate, but I was so pleased that Boogs had so much fun. We will have to check into a few more Kid runs for him before the Texas heat comes back.

There's a champion bodybuilder in the house!

My husband has been working so hard to get ready for his first bodybuilding competition. His dedication and hard work has been amazing! This is a picture of him in April 2009:
Here is a picture of him on stage taken at his bodybuilding competition yesterday, Aug. 2010 (on left):
When he sets his mind to accomplish something, nothing holds him back. Boogs and I went to the prejudging portion of the competition yesterday morning. Boogs and I made a sign that said, "GO DADDY!" Boogs decorated it with stickers. He was proud to see his daddy up on stage.

Many people backstage told my husband he was going to win his class. He was excited and nervous for the evening show. The evening show was a lot of fun. We had about 20 LOUD friends and family cheering for him. He said we were so loud that he had trouble hearing his music for his posing routine. It was very exciting to see him win both the Men's Lightweight Novice and the Men's Lightweight Open classes. He brought home two large swords for trophies. Because he won his class, he got to go up to compete for overall bodybuilder of the competition. He looked small next to the heavy weight and ultra heavy weight winners.  But he also looked the most shredded. He pushed his way between two of the big guys to do some poses during the overall pose down. This is a not so great piece of video of him moving aside the big boys. He is in the green trunks.

My mom went with me to the show. She had a good time cheering for all of the participants because, "They all worked hard to get there and deserved to hear someone cheering for them." I love my mom! I took my mom home while my husband went to the after party. I made it home a little before midnight and he came in around 2 am. We sat on the couch and talked about the show and the entire day. Then around 3 am we headed to What-a-Burger to get burgers and fries. Foods that have been taboo for months! While we were waiting for our order, a young guy (early 20s) came up to my husband and asked if he had been in the Capital of TX bodybuilding competition earlier that evening. Then he said, "Aren't you the guy that won two classes?" It was pretty weird that 5 hours and 25 miles away from the show someone recognized my husband. We stayed up until almost 5 am. It was a great night after months of intense work. I am so glad and so proud that my husband accomplished his goal.

Fitness update

Well we are three weeks out from my husband's first bodybuilding competition. He is working on getting his body fat percentage down so that his muscles will really show. It is working because you could do a charcoal rubbing of his oblique abs for an anatomy lesson. He has been putting in a lot of work at the gym and on posing for the competition.

I have been running since January. And now I have signed up for a half marathon and a warrior dash race. Last weekend I ran nine and a half miles. While looking at some training programs for "First Marathon Training", I noticed that my mileage is right on track for 18 weeks from a full marathon. Well, it is 17 weeks until my half marathon and I can switch it to a full up until two weeks before the race. I think I am going to train for a full marathon just to see if I can do it. The good thing is that there is no pressure. My goal this year is just to complete a half marathon. The extra training can't hurt. I am still at the gym three days a week and have a yoga class once a week. For my husband and I, 2010 is our "Year of Fitness".

Busy Weekend

Boogs and I decided to make Strawberry Smoothies with some of the strawberries we picked on Friday. They were yummy!

Saturday morning I participated in The Longhorn Run 10K.  My goal was to have less than 10 minute miles each. I made it with 9 min 54 sec per mile for all six of them. This was a really neat run. The course took you all over the University of Texas campus and ended with a run up the tunnel where the players come into Memorial Stadium.  I wish I had my camera with me, but I had no place to keep it while I was running.

Saturday afternoon, Boogs and I went to the ranch of a boy in Boogs' class. He had a great time playing with the other kiddos. It is so nice that they all get along. The barbeque and visiting were wonderful. Luckily, we got there after the men finished the "cow working".

Sunday was a pretty quiet day for us. Boogs woke up way too early. He opened the back door around 6 a.m. and went outside. When I got up I asked him about hearing the door to the backyard being opened. He told me, "Yeah, I was just looking at the moonlit sky." My boy is so precious. I had the rare luxury of going back to bed while my husband took Boogs out for the morning. They went "exploring" and shopping. I stayed home, rested a bit, cleaned the kitchen, did a little laundry, and had a yoga workout. We went out to one of my favorite places for a late lunch. I can never get enough creamy jalapeno dip from Chuy's Tex Mex Restaurant. Boogs eats it with Chex cereal because the chips are "too pokey". We ended the weekend by watching a movie and snuggling on the couch. I love weekends like this.

Fitness

Had my latest fitness assessment with my trainer this morning. I am down a total of 35 pounds and am now at 17.8% body fat. My husband is training for a body building competition in August. I am training along with him. I have a couple of months to decide if I want to enter the competition myself. I just can't see myself getting up on stage in a bikini and posing for a group of judges. Maybe when I lose a few more pounds and get in better shape I will feel like competing. The nice thing about competing is that is gives you a goal to strive for. In January, I took up running again after a 15 year break. So I have been competing in 5Ks and 10Ks to keep me focused on 3 runs a week, longer milage, and getting my speed up. I think I probably need to compete so that I will try and have some will power with my eating habits. For right now, I am just enjoying working out with my personal trainer three times a week and running three times a week. It has made such a difference in my confidence and how I feel about myself.
