Explorer's Club

Boogs has been enjoying Explorer's Club at the library. Here are a couple of the projects they have done lately.

Paper Mache Bowls - Boogs loved getting his hands dirty while making his bowl. He reminded me that he wants to make, no buy, a pinata this year for his birthday. He wants to help build it this time.

Rocket Blaster made out of a water bottle, bicycle inner tube, tape, and a paper rocket. This was such a cool craft. Boogs is having fun shooting his rocket all over the house. I think we might make this the craft at his next birthday party or at least at a playdate.

They also made Gak one week.

Library Explorers Club

We love our local library. They have so many wonderful programs for kids. Each Thursday, I take Boogs to the Explorers Club. Every month the club has the following themes: Crafty Kid, Super Storytime, Silly Science, and Lego lab. Boogs looks forward to the hands-on activities. Last week's Silly Science was about catapults. He made two different kinds, one with an egg carton cup and one with a spoon launcher. So much fun!

They changed it up today. Instead of Super Storytime, the librarians put on 3 short puppet shows. After the show, the puppets came out to greet the children. We were one of the last to leave because Boogs was making the dragon puppet chew on its own fingers over and over and over again. 5 is such a great age!

Explorer's Club

At the last library Explorer's Club, the kiddos learned about weather. The planned activity was to make a rooster weather vane. Boogs was very excited about making the weather vane and putting it "up on the roof". Our librarian quickly discouraged this idea and suggested that everyone fine a nice flat spot in their yard to stick their weather vane. When we got home, Boogs had me get out a compass to line up the placement of his weather vane.

Color a rooster and then cover it with contact paper to help "weather proof" it. Cover an arrow with tinfoil.

Take a skewer and wind a rubber band near one end, next poke a cup onto the skewer, add another rubber band to hold the cup in place, put a bead on the skewer, then slide a straw (attached to the rooster and tinfoil covered arrow) over the skewer. The rooster and arrow will now spin freely when you blow air on them.

The cup has N, E, S, W written on its base.  You just have to line them up properly when you poke the skewer in the your yard at home.

Boogs, and most of the other children, needed quite a bit of help to complete this project. We had fun working on it together.

Bonjour or "Bone Joe"

At the library Explorers Club today, the kids made pasta skeletons. Boogs asked another child to write "Bone Joe" on his paper to name his skeleton. Later, when we were in the car, Boogs asked me if I "got it". I had no idea what he was talking about. He smiled and said, "Bone Joe is kind of a joke like saying hello in French. Get it, Momma?" He is a clever boy.
