Lunches August 6th - 9th

Boogs' lunches are inspired by the books we read at bedtime the previous evening. Each night, Boogs reads one book to me and I read a book or a chapter of a book to him. I usually post his lunches once a week. Click on the "lunches" label at the end of this post to see lunches from previous weeks.

Mouse Makes Words by Kathryn Heling
In this book, Mouse is very busy working with rhyming words, switching out the beginning letter, and creating new words. I took out our Scrabble letter tiles for Boogs to build the words with Mouse while he read this book to me. Boogs had fun using the tiles, but he liked  changing NET to PET with the alphabet cookies even more. When I was a third grade teacher, I had a book (Making Big Words) that I used with my students to do the same kind of letter manipulation on a more advanced level. I guess I will go up in the attic and see if I can find it. In the ELB lunchbox: alphabet cookies, pb&j Mouse sandwich with fruit roll-up clothes, ham, cheese, and cherries.

My Best Friend Is Out Of This World by Sarah Albee
Maddie uses her special space radio helmet to invite a friend over for dinner. Maddie's parents are very surprised to find out that Victor is an alien. Boogs enjoyed reading this book to me. He really liked the bright and colorful illustrations. At the end of the story, Maddie gets back on her space radio to invite another friend over the next day. Boogs and I imagined what kind of guest would be coming over. Boogs used these ideas for his writing workshop story the morning after we read this book. In the ELB lunchbox: ALIEN spelled in alphabet cookies, salami & cheese spaceship sandwich with dried apricot glowing panels, blueberry alien, extra blueberries for the night sky, and Babybel Maddie sitting on top of a small salad.
Chester by Ayano Imai
Chester is a lonely little dog who is sometimes forgotten by his family. One day, Chester decides to run away from home to find a better place to live. Chester tries out many different places but nothing seems to work out. His family searches for and finally finds him. When they bring Chester back home, he realizes that home is the best place to be. His owners realize that they should not take their pet for granted. The illustrations in this book are gorgeous. In the ELB lunchbox: white wheat bread/ wheat bread pb&j Chester sandwich, pita chip books, checkered apple blanket, broccoli trees from the forest, green kiwi lamp, and strawberries.

Super quick, thrown together lunch from a morning I overslept: orange, dried apricots, tomatoes, carrots, Babybel cheese, and a tortilla filled with turkey, tomato, and lettuce.
This week I happened to find Strickland Gillilan's poem The Reading Mother. I hope this is how Boogs remembers our nightly reading ritual and snuggle time as he grows older.

The Reading Mother
I had a mother who read to me
Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea.
Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth;
"Blackbirds" stowed in the hold beneath.
I had a Mother who read me lays
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.
I had a Mother who read me tales
Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness lent with his final breath.
I had a Mother who read me the things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings-
Stories that stir with an upward touch.
Oh, that each mother of boys were such!
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be --
I had a Mother who read to me.
